Songwriters round 6 at MOJO@Denise the Wine Shop
Saturday 9th September. 9.00pm sharp
Rm20 + complimentary one bottle beer/glass of wine + free Owen Nicholas CD
The songwriters round returns with a terrific lineup this Saturday the 9th of September.
The concept behind the Songwriters Round is simple. It is basically a group of usually 3 or 4 performers taking turns presenting original material. Despite the name, the material is not confined only to songs but open to poetry, performance, drama etc. The main difference is the emphasis on the creative process behind the piece of work. Songwriters are encouraged to talk a little about their work to shed light on the significance of the songs to themselves. Audience participation is greatly encouraged either through the open mic session after the featured performers or just through a general show of appreciation.
You are all cordially invited to Kuching's Songwriters Round 6. Let the show begin.
This round we have some of Kuching's finest solo performers.
Reynold Ahviet
A stalwart of the local underground scene for the last few years, Reynold is no stranger to the Songwriters Round. We first heard him way back at Round 2 where his sublime creativity just blew us away. We have been begging for him to return ever since and this time around he has finally agreed to play. Performing four songs for us today, Reynold plays a form of music that lies somewhere between indie, rock, 80s new wave and sheer lunacy. Wildly imaginative and achingly beautiful, expect nothing less than jaw dropping brilliance from Reynold.
Ryan Ridu
Although a relative newcomer to the Kuching live scene, Ryan has impressed us with his slacker style of songwriting. When he said he was available to play for the songwriters round, we grabbed him straight away. Influenced by classic American Songwriters like Tom Waits, Ryan sings and drawls about love, heartbreak and merriment. Eccentric yet cheeky, I'm sure you be charmed by his music as much as we have.
Owen Nicholas
Owen Nicholas has been the mainstay of the songwriters round, playing 4 of the 6 rounds thus far. Blessed with arguably the finest voice in the Kuching scene at the moment, Owen plays a brand of acoustic folk which is both aesthetically and cerebrally pleasing.
The music is lovely and luminous yet lyrically dark and intelligent. Add that to his characteristic finger-picking style of guitar playing and you just might have Kuching's finest acoustic performer.
