Words-Worth! II

Friends, Poets, Storytellers, lend me your ears!

bing! coffee is hosting Words-Worth! II, a spoken word event designed to prove that Kuching writers and poets are not figments of your imagination. Come along and hear them out:

Date: 3 Aug 2008, Sunday
Time: 3.30pm
Venue: bing! coffee company, Jalan Padungan

#1: If you write and want to try your stuff on an audience, you can tell us now at tarlia[AT]gmail.com or come along with your tales on that day.

#2: If you have a talented poet/writer friend who really deserves an audience, wear them down and drag them over. (This method is usually more effective than waiting for them to respond to option #1.)

#3: We recommend letting us know at tarlia[AT]gmail.com. :-)

WARNING: Performance material may contain ghosts, fairies, people, relationships, angst, humour, stage fright, figments of your imagination and potential. May also contain (or cause) nuts.

About our Performers

Robert Raymer, who has lived in Malaysia since 1985, teaches creative writing at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak. His short stories and articles have appeared in The Literary Review, Thema, London Magazine, Frank, Going Places, Silver Kris, Far East Traveler, The Expat, The Writer, Reader’s Digest and 25 Malaysian Short Stories, Best of Silverfish New Writing 2001-2005. His short stories have been taught at several Malaysian universities, in SPM literature, and used for Cambridge International Examinations. He was the editor for Silverfish New Writings 4 (Silverfish 2004), has a collection of short stories set in Malaysia, Lovers and Strangers (Heinemann Asia, 1993), Lovers and Strangers Revisited (Silverfish, 2005) and MPH (2008). Also forthcoming from MPH is his book: Twenty Years in Malaysia: Movie Magic, Mysterious Musings, and Melodramatic Moments. His blog on writing can be found at borneoexpatwriter.blogspot.com and on his website www.BorneoExpatWriter.com

Azreen Zahira has been trying to write a "proper piece of fiction" since she was 20. She will not disclose her current age, but it's safe to assume that she's been at it for quite a while and is nowhere near finished. The main reason she hasn't finished anything is her method of taking breaks: she'll tell herself that she'll go watch TV for a bit, only to realise 12 hours later that she had just finished watching her Blackadder collection... again. When not writing or procrastinating she can usually be found bitching and drinking copious amounts of coffee with her unfortunate partner.

Victor Lim is a 3D animator, digital effects & compositing artist, videographer, video editor, web designer, and a teacher in digital content creation with a taste for 'cucur pisang' & weird 'pantun'. Visit his website at www.motionportion.com for more of his world.

Peter de Run is presently an English teacher at an international school here in Kuching. Formerly a pastor, he then ventured into professional speaking and is a consultant trainer/speaker for several training providers here in Kuching. He loves reading and has self-published 6 books so far (all but one in English). His greatest source of joy are the ladies in his life - his lovely wife Suze and his precious daughter Karen.

Georgette Tan write other people's stories for a living and barely have time for her own ghosts. One of her stories made it into a Malaysian anthology called "Dark City 2", which should be available with sufficient customer nagging at local book stores. She won a trip to a writer's festival in Bali with a 16-word story, but has yet to produce a similar feat this year. Everything else she wants you to know can be found at georgettetan.com.

CIPTA '08

Date: 11-19 April 2008
Venue: UNIMAS
Programme: Here

After the success of CIPTA in 2007, the Faculty of Applied and Creative Arts, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS), once again organised the Cetusan Inspirasi Pelajar Tahun Akhir (CIPTA ’08), in our new UNIMAS campus from the 11th till 19th April 2008.

The theme for the CIPTA ’08 exhibition is Infinart which is a combination of the words ‘Infinity and Arts. CIPTA is a yearly exhibition showcasing the artistics products and designs by the final year students of the faculty. This exhibition also functions as a platform for students to highlight their knowledge, idea and creativity to the general public. The exhibition also plays a pivotal role as a forum for students, UNIMAS staff and external art practitioners to share knowledge and experiences regarding the integration of global arts that encompasses issues of creative arts and technology.

A total of 150 students were involved in this exhibition. Among others are from the Liberal Arts Department who organised the Art Colloquium, Art Visual and Technology Department (Fine Arts, Ceramics and Electronic Arts Programs), Art Design Technology Department (Graphics, Industry Designs, Textile, Fashion and Animation) and the Cinematography program that organised the Film Festival to highlight short films produced by their students.

With these discussions and various synergies, students and UNIMAS as a whole are set to gain a plethora of experiences and knowledge in the world of creative arts. Moreover, relationships can be strengthened through a multitude of collaborations between UNIMAS and other universities and private institutions.
